Afraid Of Hiring A Contractor? You're Not Alone

Many things can go wrong when hiring a renovation contractor.
You aren’t alone in your remodeling and renovation fears.

Are You Worried About Finding A Good Contractor?

If you’re anxious about choosing the right contractor for your home renovation, you are not alone.

We have successfully completed hundreds of projects. Recently, I surveyed homeowners after completing a range of large-scale projects including whole home interior renovations, second floor additions, kitchen expansions, basement upgrades,  elevator installations, and other similarly-sized projects.

The findings were both expected and enlightening, revealing common fears shared across many projects.

These fears aren't mere desires for design assistance or the ideal all-inclusive contractor. Rather, they delve into deep-seated concerns that arise when things don't go as planned.

I've compiled a comprehensive list of the top 10 fears customers face when selecting a contractor.

These snapshots capture their expressed worries, each one elaborated on in detailed articles that explore their concerns and offer solutions for each fear.

Fear 1. Will The Work Be Done With Quality And Care? (73%)

Concerns about the quality of your renovation and the care shown to your home are very real.  Poor workmanship goes beyond bad practice; it involves using cheap materials, cutting corners, unsafe work practices, and hidden structural and electrical safety issues.

And that's just the start.  You don’t want to be one of the regular homeowners experiencing these issues during or after your renovation.

To explore this fear in greater detail and learn how to ensure your contractor delivers quality work, read our in-depth article here.

Fear 2. Are They Experienced In Related Work? (64%)

Experience and expertise are not the same thing. You need a contractor who has earned and demonstrates expertise in the specific type of work you require. Many contractors have experience but lack the necessary expertise.

When speaking with the Jones', they reminded me of their first experience with a contractor. The red flags were evident from the beginning, but they overlooked them at the time. Unfortunately, they realized this too late. Ensuring the legitimacy of your contractor's credentials is critical to the success of your renovation project.

Fear 3. Will My Contractor Be Honest And Trustworthy? (55%)

The character of the contractor you work with is crucial. You need a company with honesty, integrity, and trustworthy individuals who consistently do what is right.

Finding a contractor who embodies these values may seem like finding a needle in a haystack. However, there are reliable methods you can use to ensure you select the right contractor.

Fear 4. Will I Hate Working With My Contractor? (32%)

Chemistry between the homeowner and the contractor is so important. It's crucial to find a contractor with whom you feel comfortable collaborating. This criterion is highly personal, emphasizing the need to find a contractor who listens to your goals and creates a plan with you.

How they respect your home is equally important. A contractor who walks across your finished living room in boots, grumbling about their day, is unlikely to foster the warm, comfortable feelings you desire.

For a deeper understanding of the importance of chemistry and how to ensure a positive working relationships with your contractor, read our detailed article here.

Fear 5. Are They Committed To A Timeline? (30%)

Timing is crucial for the success of any project. You don't want to endure prolonged construction disruptions unnecessarily. It's essential to avoid contractors who sporadically appear and disappear, acting as if their presence is a favour. Ensure your renovation stays on schedule.

For insights on ensuring your contractor sticks to the timeline and how to manage project schedules effectively, explore our in-depth article here.

Fear 6. Am I Going To Get Scammed? (27%)

During a recent whole home renovation project, a satisfied customer shared his initial fears. He repeatedly expressed concerns about being "screwed" while searching for a contractor. Many others he spoke with had nightmare contractor stories to share.

Scammers are increasingly adept at separating you from your money for minimal or no work at all. It's important to stay vigilant and informed.

Fear 7. Will My Contractor Be A Good Communicator? (25%)

Effective communication between homeowners and contractors is crucial. It must be proactive, accurate, and consistent, providing confidence and clarity.

Poor communication leads to frustration, anxiety, and costly mistakes. It doesn't have to be that way - simply picking up the phone can prevent many issues.

To explore more on the importance of communication and how to ensure your contractor excels in this area, read here.

Fear 8. Will Construction Surprises Derail My Plans? (23%)

Unexpected challenges during renovations are not uncommon. However, poor planning that leads to unpleasant surprises is frustratingly frequent and can completely derail timelines and budgets.

Don't start your renovation with just an estimate - it's a recipe for disaster. Estimates are preliminary and based on initial discussions or sketches. Ensure you have a firm, accurate price for your project before construction begins.

Price integrity is crucial. The initial cost given should match the final cost paid at the end of the project. Avoid the stress of unexpected cost increases due to poor planning.

Fear 9. Can I Rely On My Contractor And Their Warranty? (20%)

The credibility of your contractor is crucial when it comes to resolving issues that inevitably arise during a project. No project goes perfectly - life (and renovations) are unpredictable. That's why having a contractor who handles these challenges with a positive mindset and reliability is essential.

Before starting your renovation project, ensure you've chosen a contractor you can rely on. Don't wait until issues arise to find out if they'll stand behind their work and honour their warranties. Being proactive in selecting a trustworthy contractor ensures peace of mind throughout your renovation journey.

Fear 10. Are They Local And Credible? (9%)

Determining if a contractor is local is easy, but don't just assume their credibility. You need to do your due diligence.

Credibility means ensuring that your contractor has a proven track record and the necessary skills to deliver quality work. It's not an IT guy who decided to become a contractor and the one-man with a truck operation. Make sure to research and verify who you're hiring to ensure they have the right credentials and a history of reliable service.
