Quality Matters: Excellence in Home Renovations

High quality work on your home addition is what you expect.
Why is it so tough to find quality renovation work in Barrie and beyond?

Quality Is What You Deserve. But What If
You Don’t Get It?

Looking for quality workmanship but worried about sub-standard results? You’re right to be worried. It’s the unfortunate reality of the world we live in today: many contractors promise top-notch work but deliver far less.

You invest years of savings into your dream renovation. It takes a great deal of time and effort on your part, so you expect the work to be done well. That’s what you deserve!

Unfortunately, the sting of shoddy work lasts forever. It's all too common. Stories abound from Simcoe County to York Region and north into cottage country of contractors who promised top quality but delivered subpar work. In some cases, their work was not only far from high quality but also potentially dangerous to your precious home and family.

Quality 2

Finding the right contractor is the key. I’ve seen many projects lacking quality and substance. Issues include:

  • Materials that are sub-standard
  • Craftsmanship that is shaky at best
  • Non-existent supervision of workers and trades
  • Absence of quality systems
  • Inadequate project auditing
  • Ignored quality procedures
  • Lack of drawings or specifications
  • Abysmal lack of training
  • Contractors “winging it” as they go

These problems are all the result of hiring the wrong person for the job.

I’ve spoken with angry homeowners in tears and their frustrated attorneys. Everyone involved is deeply upset by the poor workmanship and the prolonged process.

The Costs

The cost to repair substandard work is enormous, taking both a financial and emotional toll on exhausted homeowners. Renovations are inherently stressful, but when things go wrong, the mental and economic burdens can spiral out of control.

In fact, a recent study by Cumulus Digital Systems found that correcting poor work quality costs construction companies and their customers over $625 billion each year.

And who pays for all that? Not the contractor who did the shoddy work in the first place.

The Visible

Homeowners often reach out to me in the aftermath of a bad renovation. They ask for help fixing one problem after another, sending pictures and videos all showing the same thing – poor workmanship.

It’s hard to believe how often this happens with home addition contractors in Big Bay Point and surrounding areas.

Sometimes the problems are so obvious you wonder how in the world any contractor could cause such damage and walk away without guilt!

This is your cherished home being totally disrespected!

I’ve seen poorly finished drywall, missing studs, floorboard gaps large enough to ‘drive a truck through,’ cabinets falling off walls, silicone used as tile grout, outrageously uneven and misaligned tiles, doors that jam or only partially open… the list goes on and on.

There was even an attempt to put casing up to the ceiling to imitate “crown molding.” They actually used 13 pieces seamed to complete a single wall. Yikes!

The craziness is endless. Seeing homeowners place their trust in a contractor, paying for work in good faith, only to be left with such disappointing outcomes, is genuinely disheartening to witness.

And those are just the visible examples. I fear the hidden problems – and you should fear them, too.

The Invisible

The visible problems are bad enough. It’s what you can’t see that could lead to even more serious consequences.

Poorly done foundations, crooked walls, insufficiently supported beams, missing hangers, concrete without rebar, improperly connected electrical… these can result in severe and dangerous issues.

I completed an addition and renovation for the Campbells in Alliston a little while back. They had previously hired several different contractors over the years, constantly switching renovators because problems kept piling up.

When we opened up the walls, we were horrified to discover five locations where the electrical wiring was sparking. Five!

The wood around the wires showed severe blackening - a clear sign of potential electrical fires.

This is how electrical fires start: with just one spark, at any time of day or night, whether you're at home or away.

These problems, the visible and the invisible, can lead to frustrating renovation experiences at best and life-altering consequences at worst for homeowners.

Bad experiences can include unfinished work, do-overs, arguments, stress, anxiety, extended timelines, increased costs, and even legal action, costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s horrible.

When you’re ready to renovate your home, make sure it’s done the right way. Make sure it’s done right the first time.

You’ve worked hard for it. Understand what you want, what you need, and what you deserve. Gain confidence that you can achieve those goals.
