Afraid of Getting Scammed? If Not, You Should Be

Are you thinking about having some work done in your home? Perhaps an addition or large renovation? Maybe you've been dreaming about it for years but now you're weighed down by worries about worst-case scenarios that keep you up at night?

Instead of feeling excited about the prospect of renovating, you're caught in a state of uncertainty. Part of you wants to move forward right now! You’ve waited years for this renovation but now your valid fears hold you back.

If excitement tempts you to rush into things, it's crucial to take a step back. Moving too fast can leave you vulnerable to scammers who prey on people who make hasty decisions.

The phrase, ‘you don’t need the headache’ barely scratches the surface of what could go wrong.

Jumping in too quickly can lead to years of emotional, financial, and mental anguish caused by regrettable choices.

I hear these concerns weekly from clients planning renovations, and they're right to be cautious.

A staggering 32% of Ontario homeowners admit to being victims of renovation scams, while almost half (49.5%) know someone who has been scammed.

Scam quote

The Sanding's Fear

The Sanding family was certain they'd fall victim to a renovation scam after hearing cautionary tales from friends, family members, and coworkers who had undergone renovations.  Everyone echoed the same warning: “You are going to get screwed.”

And they believed it – the stories were pervasive.

It’s easy to find humour in the comment, but the smile fades quickly when the true consequences unfold.

Some contractors don’t set out to scam their clients, but circumstances or lack of integrity lead them down that path.

While some renovation contractors resort to the lowest bids out of necessity, others charge higher rates, yet both find themselves in similar predicaments.

Homeowners feel betrayed, experiencing genuine feelings of being deceived and exploited.

Then there are outright con artists who make it their mission to defraud you.

They might steal your deposit, misrepresent their work with false photos, cut corners, skip unseen tasks, and use subpar materials.  They disregard timelines, treating their time as their prerogative. Schedules fall by the wayside, if they show up at all. Their shoddy practices extend the job by months – and in some cases, years.

Perhaps they use inferior products and different finishes than what you had expected or ordered, all to save a buck at your expense.

In these situations, you sacrifice your time, energy, finances, safety, and the sanctity of your home. You feel exploited and may seek legal recourse to regain control or seek justice.  The legal fees pile up, emotions run high, and your home is still not as it should be.

Almost half (42.5%) of those who experienced contractor fraud also experienced a significant impact on their mental health.

It is exhausting. It deeply saddens and frustrates me to get calls every week from people who have endured such negative experiences with contractors.

Economic Factors Are Making It Harder

Adding to these challenges is a tightening economic environment, increasing the risk of exploitation for the foreseeable future.

As recently noted by Jon Christensen, CEO of Bidmii,

"It's crucial to realize that these trends we're seeing are not just a passing phase. As credit markets tighten and contractor cash flows face increasing restrictions, we anticipate these challenges to not only persist but escalate.”

Beware of con artists, desperate renovators, or unscrupulous individuals posing as contractors.  The risks include losing your hard-earned savings and dealing with costly issues down the road.

To successfully find a trustworthy contractor who will have your best interests at heart, you need to follow some basic, clear steps. Unfortunately, reliable contractors are rare, so you must be more diligent than ever.

Please don't become a statistic! You deserve a smooth, stress-free renovation experience. It is possible.  Download our guide, Mastering Home Renovations: A Homeowner's Guide to Overcoming Renovation Fears.
