Our Estimator
A Q&A with Dave on Life Behind the Numbers
The estimator is an important role in any renovation company. Dave, our experienced estimator, is responsible for turning project ideas into actionable plans by analyzing costs, materials and scope. He works closely with the design team and contractors to ensure every project starts with a well-defined scope of work and a realistic budget.
Here’s a behind the scenes look at Dave’s day-to-day work, the challenges he faces, and his insights into the world of renovations.
How did you get started in home renovations and estimating?
I started early – my first construction job was at 16, working as a labourer for a road-building company in Georgetown. After high school, I tried framing houses around Barrie, but it didn’t last long; framing wasn’t my cup of tea.
Masonry work was different. I enjoyed it and stuck with it until I got married. In 1991, I went back to school for Civil Engineering, which opened new doors. I worked for civil contractors in Toronto for 12-13 years, but the commute and constant travel wore me out.
That’s when I started my own renovation company. I enjoyed the work but found myself working seven days a week and missing time with my family. Eventually, I decided to focus on estimating to find a better work-life balance.
What does a typical day look like for you as an estimator?
I’m in the office early, usually by 7:00 am. Being in early gives me a chance to prioritize my day. Each morning starts with a list. As the day goes by, items get crossed off and new ones get added. It’s not unusual for the list at the end of the day to be longer than when it started.
Mornings are also a good time for me to connect with Paul before we both get busy. We go over priorities and touch base on any pressing projects. Lunch is usually at my desk, and I typically wrap up my day around 5:00 pm.
How do you approach balancing client budgets with project quality and scope?
Balancing a client’s budget with the scope of work and quality expectations is a challenge I deal with every day. Material prices keep rising, sometimes even mid-project, which makes it harder to stay on top of costs.
My role is to provide accurate estimates that reflect the realities of material costs and labour while aligning with the project’s design and goals. By working with the design team, I help identify where to invest and where adjustments can be made. It’s all about finding the sweet spot between the client’s vision and what is realistically achievable within their budget.
Can you explain a common misconception people have about renovation estimates?
One of the biggest misconceptions comes from TV shows and online content. I’ve heard clients reference renovation costs they’ve seen on television or websites but those numbers are rarely accurate.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to homeowners about renovations or fixed-price contracts?
Read the scope of work carefully. Make sure it addresses all your concerns. The scope is the roadmap for your renovation, and if something’s unclear or missing, it can lead to misunderstandings or additional costs down the line.
What’s your favourite part of working on renovation projects?
Finding a way to do something better. Every project comes with its own set of challenges, and I enjoy coming up with creative solutions that save time, improve quality, or enhance the overall design. It’s satisfying to see those improvements take shape.
Outside of work, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Over the years, I’ve enjoyed making furniture, working with woods like maple, walnut, oak, and cherry. Inspired by Thomas Moser, I focus on simplicity and timeless craftsmanship. Some of my favourite projects include a headboard, nightstands, and antique-style washstands. It’s rewarding to turn raw materials into something functional and beautiful.
Is there a place you’ve always wanted to visit, and what draws you to it?
I’d love to travel to Europe someday. The architecture there is incredible – the old buildings that have stood for centuries are so fascinating to me. I’d love to see how those structures were built and how they’ve lasted through time. It would be inspiring to see the craftsmanship and history up close.
I’m also drawn to visiting a Frank Lloyd Wright house. With my engineering background, I’ve always appreciated things that are straight and square, but Wright’s designs challenge that. His use of angles, materials like flat stone and wood, built-ins, and cantilevered structures is fascinating. I’d love to see how those elements come together in person.
