Shoreline Legacy

A Georgian Bay Cottage Renovation in Penetanguishene

Located along the shoreline of Georgian Bay in Penetanguishene, this cherished family cottage had long been the heart of year-round gatherings. With deep sentimental value and a layout that no longer supported the way the family used the space, the homeowners decided it was time for a renovation that respected the past while preparing the cottage for decades to come.

Outdated Layout and Seasonal Challenges Before the Renovation

The interior layout was segmented and dated, with uneven floors and awkward room placements that disrupted the flow of movement and light. The sunroom, a central gathering place for conversation and connection, was under-insulated and too cold in the winter, making it unusable for part of the year. The kitchen - tucked into the middle of the home - limited both usability and connection to other spaces.

Design Goals: Family Comfort, Functionality, and Flexibility

The family's goals for the renovation were clear:

  • Create a space that could adapt to different group sizes and occasions
  • Improve the comfort and usability of the cottage in all seasons
  • Design a kitchen with personality, colour, and functionality
  • Preserve special family features like Grandma's dedicated bedroom
  • Add practical improvements such as a mudroom and lots of storage space

Opening Up the Cottage: Layout and Structural Improvements

The floor plan of the original cottage was segmented, with closed-off rooms that interrupted flow and made gatherings difficult.

In the reconfigured floor plan, you can see how the space was reimagined:

  • Walls were removed, and a flush beam was installed to support an open-concept layout
  • The kitchen was relocated to a more functional location along the perimeter, improving connection to dining and living areas
  • The former main bedroom was moved to the opposite side of the cottage, making way for a new mudroom with built-in bench and custom millwork
  • The sunroom was integrated more fully with the interior by adding sliding double French doors, allowing it open or close off depending on use.

These changes improved traffic flow, created more usable space, and enhanced the overall flexibility of the cottage for gatherings and quiet weekends alike.

The Finished Space: Flexible, Comfortable, and Designed for Every Season

With the layout reimagined and every detail considered, the finished cottage now offers the comfort, flow, and flexibility the family had long envisioned.

The open-concept living area connects seamlessly to the bold green kitchen, creating a central hub for cooking, conversation, and connection. Natural light fills the space, enhanced by new windows and the strategic removal of interior walls.

The mudroom, created from the relocated bedroom space, adds both charm and function, featuring custom rustic millwork and a built-in bench perfect for year-round use.

The sunroom - once chilly and isolated - has been transformed into a true four-season retreat. With sliding interior French doors and new windows, it can now flex between open gathering space and cozy escape.

From everyday functionality to hosting extended family, this renewed cottage balances warmth, personal style, and thoughtful design at every turn.
