Paul Hood: At the Helm of Design and Renovation
Today, we're sitting down with Paul, the owner of Bay Point Contracting. With years of experience in the home renovation industry, Paul has transformed many homes and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Let’s get to know him and learn more about his journey.
How did you get started in the renovation industry?
My start in renovations was quite organic. My father was in the business for most of his life, and I began working for him during the summers at a very young age. Growing up in a family of eight boys, I was always learning from my older brothers who were also in construction.
By 18, I was taking on projects independently, working on addition framing, ceiling repairs, foundation repairs, trim carpentry, and more.
Later, I gained further skills in custom cabinetry while working in a millwork shop. I’ve never stopped learning and always enjoyed problem-solving.
What inspired you to start your own company?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Despite being deeply involved in construction, I didn’t see it as a career during high school.
After partnering with my older brother for about 12 years, I decided it was time to start my own renovation company.
I loved the transformation process in renovations and wanted to embrace strong principles and values that aligned with my vision.
Starting my own company allowed me to focus on providing a great customer experience, and that’s when I truly began to love what I do.

What advice would you give to someone looking to renovate their home for the first time?
First, find a reputable contractor you can trust. Make sure they have a clear and thorough process in place.
Don’t cut corners – quality doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should be prioritized.
Communicate openly, ask questions, and stay involved.
Choose a contractor who values transparency, reliability, and customer satisfaction for a smooth, rewarding experience.
What’s your favourite part of the renovation process?
Each phase has its own satisfaction. Even demolition, insulation, or cleanup can be rewarding when done well.
I enjoy crafting with my hands, especially with wood finishes.
Seeing the finished product, professionally cleaned and ready for move-in, is a special moment. The positive emotional response from the client makes it all worthwhile.
The most rewarding part is hearing the excited reactions from homeowners when we exceed their expectations, whether it’s about the timeline, cleanliness, or the finished product.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love spending time with my wife and kids, especially while travelling or sailing.
For personal time, I enjoy playing hockey as a goalkeeper.
Like everyone, I wouldn’t mind a little more free time.
What do you want clients to know about you that they can’t find out elsewhere on the website?
My wife and I were born only a couple hours apart on the same day in the same hospital. Seems like we were destined to be together!
I enjoy being on the water and have sailed from Bermuda to Annapolis and in the Caribbean.
I’ve faced 25-foot seas and 65-knot winds on Lake Huron.
Those experiences taught me the importance of staying on the boat. Falling out of a boat is dangerous!
