Modern Mansard
This modern home renovation in Brechin, Ontario, transformed a beloved generational home originally built by the client’s father. Over the years, it served as a seasonal retreat for the family.
A unique feature of the original design was the front door, which had been blocked by a spiral staircase and was purely decorative. This meant that guests were always welcomed through the side entrance, leading directly into the laundry room. To make the front door functional, we redesigned the staircase, replacing it with an L-shaped, open-riser design that complemented the flooring and maintained an airy feeling.
To modernize the exterior while preserving abundant natural light, we installed a curtain wall across the front of the house, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
The cottage’s DIY charm included picture-frame moulding on nearly every wall. As this was no longer desired, we removed it and added wide plank shiplap to the two-story vestibule – a modern update that honoured the home’s character.
Accessibility Upgrade
This accessibility renovation focused on transforming a newly purchased home into a fully wheelchair-accessible living space across all levels. The work began with a patio lift and new composite porch at the front entrance, ensuring immediate access.
After securing permits, we built a second-floor addition and installed an elevator in the garage, connecting all three levels and the garage itself. The elevator now provides smooth access to the kitchen, basement, primary bedroom, and garage, removing all mobility barriers.
To ensure cohesion, both interior and exterior finishes were matched to the original home. Oak trim and hardwood flooring carried throughout the interior maintain a warm, elegant look. Additional upgrades included a rear deck, finished basement, oak barn doors, and updated kitchen and bathrooms.
The project was recently completed with a new roof, adding both protection and value. This renovation shows that accessibility and elegant design can go hand in hand, creating a home that is both beautiful and barrier-free.
