Exterior Refresh
A Forever Home Transformed in Barrie
This exterior renovation in Barrie gave a classic raised bungalow a complete refresh – front to back. The home originally featured a cramped foyer, dated aluminum siding, and a small wooden deck that had seen better days. The retired homeowners envisioned a long-term upgrade that would improve comfort, function, and curb appeal, while blending new elements seamlessly into the existing structure.
A Look at the Original Exterior
Before the renovation, the home presented as a well-loved raised bungalow with traditional styling and limited architectural distinction. The front featured a large concrete porch and dated railings that didn’t quite match the home’s proportions. The aluminum siding and small entryway, though neat and maintained, gave the exterior a closed-off feel.
While functional, the front lacked the warmth and definition the homeowners envisioned. The driveway and walkway were also due for an update to better complement the home’s scale and enhance overall curb appeal.
These photos show the home’s solid foundation and potential – setting the stage for the transformation to come.
Designing for Function and Flow
The renovation was guided by a clear vision: to improve daily functionality while creating a more balanced, welcoming exterior. Inside, the existing foyer felt cramped and disconnected from the rest of the home. Extending the front wall to align with the garage allowed for a larger, more practical entryway and gave the front elevation a cohesive, well-proportioned look.
At the back, the homeowners wanted to bring long-held plans for a workshop to life. The new addition, built on a reinforced foundation, created a bright, purpose-built space with large windows overlooking the pool. Above it, the design made room for a spacious composite deck – replacing the smaller, aging wood deck that once occupied the space.
These strategic structural adjustments not only improved the home’s flow but also enhanced the connection between indoor and outdoor living areas.
A New Look, Front to Back
The renovation completely redefined the home’s presence. At the front, the extended foyer blends seamlessly with the original structure, framed by a Douglas fir timber entry that adds warmth and character. Black powder-coated steel and stainless-steel railings provide a crisp, modern accent.
Poured-in place concrete stairs and walkways were finished with custom-cut limestone, leading to a fibreglass front door stained to match the timber tones. Fresh Maibec wood siding and a new asphalt driveway complete the clean, balanced façade.
At the back, the new workshop and spacious composite deck create a natural connection to the pool and ravine. Wide cedar stairs, layered fascia, and matching railings tie the design together for a cohesive finish that feels both timeless and enduring.
